The Power of Inclusive Literacy
Young Kamsi peered through the window, watching a stream of children heading to school, as the sun was just rising over the horizon. He looked over his shoulder as his mother was arranging his books to guide him through his math lessons. With a soft voice, he asked, “Why can’t I join them, mum?” She tried, but couldn’t hold back tears, as she rushed to him, and gave him a warm embrace before helping him put on his prosthetic limb, and they both went downstairs.
Fast forward 32 years later, Kamsi gazes out of the window of his office, observing the young pupils of his inclusive school with a mixture of pride and fulfilment. He sees his 8-year-old self, mirrored in their eager faces. Deep within, he knows that the challenges he faced in his childhood will be eased for countless others through the impact he can make on their lives.
Inclusive literacy refers to ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities or differences, have access to and can engage effectively in an educational environment. This approach recognises and accommodates diverse needs by providing tailored support, materials, and teaching methods to ensure that every student can participate and succeed in literacy activities.
Many educators tend to remove students with disabilities from regular literacy sessions because they assume these learners require special instruction and materials. However, in reality, a variety of students, including those with physical disabilities, cognitive challenges, autism, and other similar conditions, can successfully engage in mainstream classrooms with appropriate support such as conditioned materials, personalised goals, and collaborative teaching.
In certain instances, students do require specific literacy instruction to address their individual needs, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to be taken out of mainstream classrooms. With thoughtful and imaginative planning, teaching can be adjusted to cater to the needs of all students in the class.
Moreover, inclusive literacy fosters a culture of empathy, understanding, and acceptance among students, promoting social cohesion and mutual respect. By engaging in collaborative learning experiences that celebrate diversity, students develop valuable interpersonal skills and learn to appreciate the unique contributions of their peers.
